Struggling to choose between French doors and patio doors for your property? Explore the pros and cons.

When it comes to doors and windows, today's homeowners are spoilt for choice. Whatever style you have in mind, there's something in a showroom or online store with your name on it.

But this unparalleled level of choice has a frustrating flipside. When there are so many options to comb through, how on earth are you supposed to make a decision?

Here at Calder Windows, we've been furnishing the people of Yorkshire with high-quality doors and windows for more than 30 years. So, if you want to know the pros and cons of different windows and doors, you've come to the right place.

In this article, we look at French doors and patio doors. These are two types of doors typically found at the back of a house or the front of a conservatory.

Both help bring home and garden closer together. But which one is right for you? It depends, as these things so often do, on your specific tastes and requirements.

When someone comes to us for advice, we don't tell them our preference without any further questions. Instead, we listen to their specific request. How big is the room? Do they like a specific era or design style? Are they looking to improve the value of the property as well as its appearance?

It's only by answering questions like these that we can give them our informed opinion. We hope this blog post does a similar job – guiding you through the most salient factors to help you make the right choice. Good luck!

What are the differences between French doors and patio doors?

They open differently

The main difference between French doors and patio doors is how they open.

French doors swing open on hinges. Like a standard door, they can be opened wide. Patio doors, by contrast, slide horizontally on a track.

They look different

The difference between the two types of doors isn't purely functional – it's also aesthetic.

French doors consist of two hinged, glazed doors. They have a classic look. If it weren't for the modern frame, you could be forgiven for thinking they were from the 19th century rather than the 21st. Sometimes, the main door panels are split into smaller squares or rectangles.

Patio doors typically consist of two large overlapping panes. A window buff might think of it as a large sash window laid horizontally. Its size makes it function almost like a picture window – and it has a similarly sleek and modern look.

They have different space requirements

Another difference between French doors and patio doors is how they interact with the existing space.

French doors need space immediately in front of them to swing into. If they open out onto the garden, this isn't often a problem. However, it can have an impact on the amount of furniture you have room for.

Patio doors don't need this space to swing in. Instead, they slide along a track, making them ideal for areas where space is at a premium.

What are the benefits of French doors?

In our opinion, there are four main benefits of French doors.

1. Security

Most modern French doors are fitted with laminated glass and multi-point locking systems. This makes them exceptionally hard to break or break into. When a set of French doors is split into smaller glass panels, this security only increases.

2. Style

French doors add architectural interest to any property. In turn, this can increase the market value of your home.

3. Versatility

French doors are versatile. Here at Calder Windows, we provide French doors in a range of appealing colours and finishes. Whatever your taste, we can help you choose a set of French doors that will blend into and enhance your property.

4. An outdoors-indoors feel

Finally, French doors bring the outdoors in. This can help create an airy environment for entertaining, a sense of spaciousness or simply a pleasant, welcoming vibe.

What are the benefits of patio doors?

Patio doors have the same benefits as French doors. They're secure. They add aesthetic interest to your home. They're versatile. And they bring the outdoors in.

However, patio doors have several benefits that French doors don't.

If your back room, conservatory, patio or garden is on the smaller side, French doors may take up too much room. In this situation, patio doors are the right choice to make.

And if you want a more modern aesthetic, patio doors are the way to go. Their sliding action and large, sleek surfaces give them a modern look that French doors lack.

Finally, there's the question of ventilation. French doors are either open or closed. Patio doors, however, can be partially opened to control the airflow more precisely.

What should I look for in a French door or patio door?

When buying a set of French doors or patio doors, there are several things to keep an eye out for.

They should be built to a high standard. They should be made with durable materials – toughened or laminated glass and a uPVC frame will do the job nicely. They should be easy to open and easy to keep in good condition. And they should keep the heat in as much as possible.

Your best bet is to work with a supplier that's experienced, professional and friendly. They'll be able to fix you up with the doors you need and install them with minimal disruption.

Frequently asked questions

C'est simple! French doors get their name from their origins in 17th-century France.
