Bifold doors across Yorkshire

A bifold door is a set of three or more hinged leaves that concertina back against one wall when opened, giving you a full clear opening across a wide section of the room. Done properly, on the right extension, they change how a house feels in summer.

We fit bifold doors in Yorkshire — external bi-fold glass doors in aluminium for slim sightlines and larger openings, and in uPVC for budget-focused projects. All fitted across West Yorkshire.

A full clear opening

Unlike patio doors (where at least one leaf stays fixed) or French doors (limited to about 2.1 metres), bifolds can give you an almost completely clear opening across three, four, five, or six metres. One side of the room becomes part of th

The look of the room changes with the weather

Closed in winter, bifolds give you a wall of glass with views straight through. Open in summer, the line between the inside and the outside disappears. Most of our customers tell us it’s the single change that most alters how they use the room year-round.

They suit modern extensions

If you’ve built a rear extension, bifolds are almost certainly one of the specifications you’ll look at. They’re designed for exactly that kind of project.

Traffic flow and furniture

Because the leaves fold back against the wall, there’s no dead swing space taken up in the room or the patio. The leaves stack neatly at one or both ends.

Configurations

Number of leaves

Three leaves suits openings of around 1.8 to 2.4 metres. Four leaves works up to around 3 metres. Five and six leaves take you out to 4 or 5 metre openings depending on the specific range.

Traffic door included

One leaf in the set can be specified as a “traffic door” that opens independently like a single hinged door. Useful when you want to pop in and out of the garden without folding the whole set back. Most customers specify this.

Stacking direction

Leaves can fold to the left, to the right, or split with some leaves folding each way. We’ll design the configuration around how the room works and where the bifolds will actually stack against the wall.

uPVC vs aluminium bifolds

Pick aluminium if

  • The opening is wider than 2.4 metres
  • Slim sightlines matter (and on bifolds, sightlines matter a lot)
  • The room is a feature room (kitchen, living, dining)
  • You want specific RAL colours or textured finishes
  • Long-term durability and hardware quality are priorities

Honestly, most bifold installs are aluminium, and for the right reasons.

Pick uPVC if

  • Budget is the main driver
  • The opening is smaller (around 2 to 2.4 metres)
  • You want matching colour with uPVC windows
  • You’re comfortable with thicker sightlines

What you get from a Calder bifold fit

Thermally broken aluminium

Every aluminium bifold we fit has a thermal break in the frame to prevent heat loss through the metal. Hits A-rated energy performance with double glazing, A++ with 40mm triple glazing.

Proper track and roller systems

Bifold hardware is the most punished component in the door. Cheap tracks and rollers fail within years. We fit ranges with hardened rollers, stainless tracks, and top-hung or bottom-rolling systems specified for frequent use.

Multi-point locking

Standard. Hook locks at the traffic door, shoot-bolts at the top and bottom of the folding leaves, and anti-lift features throughout.

Low or flush thresholds

Level access from inside to outside is almost always requested, and we fit ranges with proper low or flush thresholds that keep the weather out without tripping up the family.

Integral blinds

Available on most bifold ranges. Standard blinds on bifold doors get in the way every time you fold them, so integral blinds are the right answer.

  • Also common: jet black, textured matt grey, white (inside) with anthracite (outside)
  • Any RAL colour available on aluminium
  • uPVC: white, anthracite grey, Irish oak, rosewood

The install

Bifold installation is more involved than standard window or door replacement. The opening usually needs precise preparation, the track must be fitted dead level, and the leaves need careful setup to hang and operate smoothly.

Typical install takes two to four days on site. Longer if the opening is being created or widened as part of a new extension.

Every install is FENSA-signed off and comes with a 10-year guarantee* on most products.

Bifold FAQs

  • How wide can a bifold door be?

Up to 5 or 6 metres on aluminium ranges with appropriate specification. 2.4 to 4 metres is the most common range for residential projects.

  • How many leaves do I need?

Depends on the opening width. A rough guide: 1.8m for 3 leaves, 2.4m for 3 or 4 leaves, 3.6m for 4 or 5 leaves, 4m+ for 5 or 6 leaves. We’ll size it properly at survey.

  • Should I have a traffic door?

Almost always yes. It lets you use the bifold as a regular door in winter or on wet days without folding the whole set open.

  • Are bifolds secure when closed?

Yes. Multi-point locking, hook locks, and shoot-bolts are all standard. Our ranges meet Secured by Design on qualifying specifications.

  • Are bifold doors draughty?

Not if they’re specified and fitted properly. Quality track-and-roller systems with modern weather seals don’t let draughts through. Cheap bifolds do.

  • What’s the difference between bifolds and patio doors?

Bifolds fold back for a full open view. Patio doors slide sideways and always leave at least one leaf in place. Bifolds open bigger but have more frame when closed. Patio doors have cleaner sightlines closed but leave more of the opening blocked open.
