Windows, doors and York conservatories

We’re Calder Windows, a family-run door and window specialist serving York and the surrounding area. Based in Normanton, we’ve been fitting windows, doors, conservatories and extensions across North and East Yorkshire for over 30 years, including York’s historic centre, its Victorian suburbs, and the growing modern developments on the outskirts.

York conservatories are a particular specialism — conservation area rules are strict, and our team knows the council-approved styles and finishes for the city's historic streets.

York has some of the most protected housing in the country

The historic centre of York is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and a huge portion of the city sits within conservation areas or close to listed buildings. Replacement windows and doors here need careful specification. It’s one of the more rule-bound places we work, and we take the planning side seriously.

Outside the historic core, York has a strong Victorian and Edwardian suburban stock, a good run of 1930s semis, modern estates, and the new developments around the ring road and out towards Haxby, Dunnington, and Copmanthorpe.

Central York and conservation areas

Most replacements in central York are in sliding sash or flush sash profiles, often with slim-sightline double glazing to meet conservation requirements. We check planning rules for every project in these areas before we quote.

Acomb, Dringhouses, Fulford, Bishopthorpe, Heworth. Bay windows and casement replacements are the most common requests, with anthracite grey, Irish oak, and white finishes leading the colour choices.

Listed buildings

York has a high concentration of listed buildings, especially in the historic core. Listed building consent is a separate process from normal planning, and in most cases timber is the only permitted material for windows. We’ll flag this upfront and point you in the right direction if your property is listed.

Full range, but sliding sash and flush sash casement windows are the most-requested for central and suburban York. We also fit a lot of bay windows on the 1930s semi stock across the city.

Conservatories and orangeries

York has a big stock of tired late-1990s and early-2000s conservatories that need either a roof upgrade or a full replacement. Warm roof conversions are one of our most-requested services in the York area.

House extensions in York

Single-storey rear extensions are a growing part of our York work. Most qualify under permitted development, though any extension in a conservation area or near a listed building needs a full planning application. We handle either route.
