If you're looking to create the perfect indoor-outdoor space at home, you can't go wrong by installing a set of bifold or sliding patio doors.

Patio doors are the perfect solution to blur the boundaries between your living and garden space. They bring light and airflow into your home, create the perfect entertaining space and seamlessly bring the outdoors in.

However, the choice between bifold and sliding patio doors isn't always easy. Both styles offer an elegant architectural feature, open up your living space and allow for dazzling outdoor views.

So, which option do you pick? Well, the magic may be in the details. Subtle differences between these two door styles may ultimately determine which design will be the right fit for you.

Let's take a look.

Sliding patio doors

Sliding doors are popular for their sleek aesthetics and ease of use. They're typically made up of two or more large leaves that move horizontally along a track, sliding seamlessly behind a final fixed frame.

They offer uninterrupted views and plenty of natural light. Their huge glass panes and minimal framework open up your home beautifully, giving you sweeping views. And when you really want to open up your living space, they slide neatly away.

Because they open parallel to the wall, they do not require any swing space. That means you get to use all your floor space without worrying about obstruction. Be it a comfy seat to soak up the view, a beautiful indoor plant or just extra room to move around…take your pick!

And the versatility is there. Patio doors can now be installed with either:

  • Low and flush thresholds, for easy access without compromise
  • Standard-sized thresholds, where extra weather performance is top priority

Bifold patio doors

At a glance, bifold patio doors may seem pretty alike to their sliding cousin.

The main difference lies in the way they open. With bifold doors, the large glass leaves fold and stack like a concertina.

This design tucks the door units completely out of the way, giving you a transformative feel to your indoor-outdoor space.

This ability to effectively "remove" an outside wall of your home makes bifold doors popular for homeowners who wish to create:

  • An impressive entertaining space
  • An open-plan living area
  • A semi-alfresco dining spot

While their impact when fully opened is certainly striking, bifold patio doors are also regularly installed with a traffic door. This is a separate leaf that can open independently, offering everyday access for quick trips in and out of the garden.

Thanks to their concertina opening mechanism, bifold doors can feature flush thresholds that create a seamless visual transition between your home and garden space.

They do, however, require a little extra space to pivot out when opening and closing them. That potentially makes them less practical for smaller, less spacious rooms.

Bifold doors vs sliding doors: the key differences

Opening styles

The choice between sliding and concertina opening mechanisms is largely dependent on your personal preference. Both work beautifully to let floods of light and fresh air into your home. However, bifold doors can fold away completely, while sliding doors will need at least one fixed panel left in place for the others to tuck behind.

Space

Bifold patio doors and sliding patio doors have slightly different space requirements. Because sliding doors operate along a parallel threshold, the door itself doesn't encroach on any of your indoor or outdoor floor space. Bifolds, however, require a little more room for their hinged panels to swing, fold and stack.

Frames

Both bifold and sliding patio doors use large glass panes with minimal frames, meaning views are not obscured. However, sliding door units have wider panes with less visible frames, offering clearer, more panoramic views.

Cost

Generally speaking, bifolds carry a slightly higher price tag. This is mainly due to a more intricate installation process.

H3: Similarities between bifold and sliding patio doors

Home transformation

Both bifold and sliding patio doors can transform the look and feel of your home. They can:

  • Give you stunning views
  • Bring floods of natural light and ventilation into your home
  • Create an impressive indoor-outdoor space
  • Make your rooms feel brighter and bigger

Energy efficiency

New installations of both door styles perform excellently for energy efficiency, typically achieving U-values of around 1.1 to 1.6 W/m²K. Triple-glazed units can achieve values as low as 0.8 W/m²K.

Security

Many modern patio doors are fitted with multi-point locking systems, making them very secure and tamper-resistant.

The verdict

Ultimately, choosing between bifold and sliding styles for your new patio door installation will depend largely on:

  • Your lifestyle
  • The space you have available
  • Your personal style preferences
  • Your budget

Bifold doors can create a more seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces when opened. Sliding doors, meanwhile, can offer less interrupted, more panoramic views of your outside space when closed.

Both door styles perform well in energy efficiency, security, durability, ease of use and maintenance.
