FENSA accreditation is the gold standard for competency in our industry. So, if your installer doesn't have its stamp of approval, you should look elsewhere.

It's important to note, however, that FENSA is just one of the accreditations that fall under competent person schemes. Others include Certass and Assure. Certass is often linked to TrustMark – a quality scheme that demonstrates high standards for window installers and others.

Window and door fitters are also legally obliged to have a minimum technical competence (MTC) card or qualification.

Finally, you can look for accreditation from the British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC). This is the authority on energy-efficiency ratings for windows and doors.

IBGs cover installation errors, product failures and deposit protection. However, they don't cover wear and tear, accidental damage or damage caused by external disasters.

Red flags to walk away from

When choosing a window installer, you should look out for a number of red flags. This might sound like hard work, but trust us – it's worth it in the long run.

Ultimatums. Is your window installer telling you to sign today or lose out on a deal? Pass.
Carrot-and-stick-deals. Starting with a high price and then slashing it if you sign on the spot.
Faking a call to the manager who offers a discount just for you.
Quote too good to be true? It is.
Verbal promises without a detailed written contract.
Companies with just a phone number and no office or showroom.
Cash-only demands.
No proof of public liability insurance.
No accreditations – or no proof of accreditations.
No insurance-backed guarantees.

If you spot any of these red flags, it's in your best interests to walk away and look for another installer. In the long run, ignoring the warning signs will only mean costly replacement work in future.
