When you first read the heading, you probably pictured autumnal displays with pumpkins – or twinkly, snow-laden windows dressed up for Christmas. However, we've got something a little more useful in mind.

See, while it might sound a bit "out there" to talk about decorating your windows, most people do it without really realising it.

Whether it's curtains, drapes, Venetian blinds or blackout blinds, what we add to our windows makes a drastic difference to our homes. It affects the overall ambience and can be a real mood setter, depending on the environment.

Think curtains are just curtains? Think again. Let's look at three classic window dressings and explore how they can make your home a happier place to be, no matter the season.

1. Curtains

Ah, the age-old classic. While curtains have been considered a little passé in recent years, they've since made a huge comeback. In fact, curtains are now among the most popular window dressings for younger homeowners.

It's easy to see why. With a huge variety of styles, fabrics and colours on offer, curtains can help to complete a room like no other window dressing.

The trick with curtains is to lead with length. This sets the tone for the space.

A tailored curtain, for example, would sit around a quarter of an inch from the floor. A dramatic style, on the other hand, might pool at the floor for an elongated effect.

Now, if interior design isn't your forte, there's no harm in going for the ever-trusty casual approach. This simply involves matching the curtain length to the height of the window.

There's more to consider than length alone. You should also think about the type of fabric you'll use and its colour. Heavier and darker fabrics, for instance, can help to control the amount of light that enters the room.

Follow these tips and you'll ensure your room is inviting and homely, no matter the season. Whether they're closed for comfort or blowing in a soft summer breeze, curtains are always versatile and always effective.

2. Blinds

Thinking about installing blinds? There are a couple of points you should consider.

The first is the positioning of the blinds. Are they going to be fitted inside the window recess or outside of it?

Placing them inside is the more flexible option. It means you can install curtains alongside the blinds and can further decorate the space with ornaments or plants. You might choose to install them outside the recess, meanwhile, if your window frame is too narrow to accommodate the blinds or if you want to show off a decorative window.

Your choice also affects the amount of light that can enter a room. If the blind is hung inside the recess, it will prevent more light from entering the room, whereas a blind fixed outside the recess will allow more light to pass through.

The next thing to consider is the type of blind you'd like. Trust us – there are tonnes to choose from! Roller blinds, Venetian blinds, blackout blinds, Roman blinds, pleated blinds… The list goes on.

Make sure to familiarise yourself with the many options available. Choose correctly and your blinds will complement and enhance your décor, whether you're aiming for something minimalist and understated or going for full-on glamour.

3. Accessories

Now, we're not just talking about seasonal themes such as Christmas, Easter and autumn. We're talking all-year-round sprucing.

The accessories that you add to your window can help to solidify your décor and the overall style of the room.

If you're going for a modern organic look, try adding large oversized vases in neutral colours, along with stacked books and reed diffusers. This look would go beautifully with long, draping curtains and wooden blinds that let the light pour into your living space.

Dark and mysterious rooms can be accessorised with deep green plants, large candles and textured ornaments. If you like this look, go for dark, heavy fabric curtains that frame the window and keep the tone secretive yet inviting.

Whether you're styling with themed accessories or keeping it simple yet effective with a few ornaments, there are tonnes of options to choose from. Let your own preferences guide you and you'll soon have a window space that feels like a focal point for the whole room.
