Keep that glass shining: 5 of the best window-washing tools
Want your windows to shine? Explore 5 of the best window washing tools to help you in your quest.

The Scottish poet and minister George MacDonald once penned a paean to cleaning windows. "What a difference it makes!" he wrote. "How it melts the filthy gloom!"
So far, so relatable. But the next two lines might be met with scepticism by many homeowners: "What a little more it takes / Much to brighten up a room!"
A
little more, George?
Really?
Let's face it: there's a reason why many people get a professional in to clean their windows. Doing the job well takes time and energy – two scarce resources in a busy life. Melting the filthy gloom isn't something you can strike off your to-do list in a matter of minutes.
On the other hand, the DIY approach is more cost-effective and can give you a greater sense of control over your castle.
So, if you are going to do it yourself, what tools do you need? Here are five of the best.
1. Microfibre cloths
Microfibre cloths are an indispensable ally in the war against grime – and they're essential for cleaning windows.
Opt for a rougher scrubber and you could damage the window permanently. Use rags or paper towels and you'll watch with frustration as the dirt gets moved around the glass. But use a microfibre cloth and you can watch the dirt go without leaving streaks.
On the subject of softness, the same principle applies to your cleaning solution. Make sure you're using a glass-friendly liquid to clean your windows. Harsh chemicals will only cause damage.
2. Window vacuum cleaners
Most window cleaning tools are all about wiping. But another way to get rid of grime is to suck it up with a window vacuum cleaner.
There's a plethora of handheld window vacs on the market. Some are rechargeable, while others require single-use batteries. Some can even be used to get rid of condensation.
What all of them have in common is their ability to suck up the residue left by your spray and microfibre cloth. The result: sparkle without sweat. Not bad!
3. Extendable squeegee poles
Do you have a top-floor window that's a pain in the neck to clean? Live in an upper-floor apartment? An extendable squeegee pole could be a good investment.
You could, of course, get up there with a ladder. But not everyone feels safe on ladders, even with a friendly pair of hands securing it in place.

An extendable squeegee pole lets you clear up water and debris from windows without mounting a ladder. And it helps you reach even the most awkward, hard-to-reach spots.
It does, however, need to be used in conjunction with other tools. While it's great for removing water and debris, it's not so hot on edges, corners and other tight spots.
4. Robotic window cleaners
In 2011, a Korean firm brought out the windoro – the world's first commercially available robot window cleaner.
Since then, a range of models have become available. They differ in details, but all help you reach the same goal – hands-free window cleaning.
Today's models, such as the Hobot and Ecovacs Winbot, can be attached to windows with suction pads. Once attached, they use sensors and AI to navigate the surface. Some spray the surface with cleaning solution. All wipe away cleaning solution with microfibre pads.
Robot window cleaners get mixed reviews. At their best, however, they can be a valuable addition to your cleaning arsenal. And for those of you who love smart technology, many models can be controlled with an app.
5. Magnetic window cleaners
Need to clean an upper-floor window but don't want to use a ladder or an extendable pole? You could explore the world of magnetic window cleaners. These have one overriding advantage: they're double-sided.
You attach one part of the cleaner to the inside of the window and the other part to the outside. The magnets on each part create a firm grip.
As you wipe down the inside window with one part, the outside part follows. This lets you tackle two jobs with one tool and get sparkling windows inside and out.
Other tips and considerations for cleaning windows
- Make sure you prep your window frames and handles before cleaning the glass itself. Otherwise, you risk dragging dirt from the frame onto the glass.
- Keep your materials and tools close at hand. If you don't want to worry about picking them up and putting them down, why not invest in a work belt?
- Spray the windows from top to bottom and then clean them with a zig-zag motion. This helps keep streaks to a minimum.
- Many argue that you get better results cleaning windows on a cloudy day than when the sun is shining. This is because sunshine can evaporate the cleaning solution before it's done its job.
- When you're done, clean your equipment so it's ready to use next time.
How often should I clean my windows?
Short answer: it depends. Longer answer: if you live in an especially windy or rainy part of the world, you may have to clean your windows every few weeks. Otherwise, every few months should do.
Can I clean my windows with vinegar?
Yes, you can! Simply mix vinegar and water, then apply it to the windows with your trusty microfibre cloth.
Can I jet-wash my windows?
Yes – but you need to be careful not to damage the windows or put yourself at risk of falling. Make sure to look up tips and tricks before getting out the jet washer.
